Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s that belly ?

Music and dance has been an essential part of Bollywood filmography. Belly dancing has been a great influence in bollywood dance sequences. It is an Arabic dance form, Raqs sharaqi,  which is a more familiar form to the westerners.

Zeenat Aman, was one of the first to have incorporated belly dancing in a song from ‘ The Great Gambler ‘, dawning a red dress, she managed to sizzle on screen, but apparently didn’t have the oomph factor. Queen Helen of the Indian item number scene has always incorporated belly dance moves in her numbers, ‘Mehbooba’ from Sholay has always been remembered as one of her best  performances. In recent years, Mallika Sherawat’s ‘Maiya Maiya’ from Guru was one where she showed off her skills . Even more recent is Rani Mukherji, who in her attempt to create one of the most well rehearsed dance sequences in her upcoming movie, Aiyya, has trained for 3 months in order to attain the perfect curves required on a belly dancer’s figurine.

‘Aga Bai’, ‘Dreamum Wakepum’ and ‘Sava dollar’ are the item numbers that rani will be seen shaking to, Aiyya, co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, in theatres 12th oct, 2012.
