Bollywood Flops

Bollywood box office is majorly driven by the cast of the film and the hype that’s created by the producers in a bid to work the film at the box office. A lot of buzz is created, but it doesn’t always pay up. Here’s a list of films that were marketed as blockbusters, but flopped badly.

Ra.One – The SRK and Kareena Kapoor starrer was meant to be the Badshah’s turn to play superhero and attract his fans with computer graphics and bizarre action sequences. SRK said that it was his toughest project ever. The songs, as always were a hit, with special performances by international singer Akon. But the film overall was a flop and didn’t quite work it’s magic.

Aiyyaa – Rani Mukherji’s return to the screen after a while turned out to be a go-back instead of a come-back. The film was marketed all over as Rani’s return with a lot of work she’d done for the dance sequences. But the film flopped and all of Rani’s hardwork was washed away by a script that didn’t make sense.

Blue – This film tells us how badly a film budget can be spent . Good special effects, fantastic locations and great music by A.R.Rahman. Picturised in Hollywood style , the audience rejected it anyway. Even with the big cast, the film never met expectations.

Delhi 6 Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra gave us the classic Rang De Basanti and right after he gave us ‘Delhi 6’, which was such a disappointment. The film had too many sub-sequences to the main storyline, which the film-maker couldn’t give justice to and the audience was bored to death.

Chandni Chowk To China – Akshay Kumar’s charm was lost when he did the film. Nikhi Advani made a blockbuster like Kal Ho Na Ho and when he tried to fuse his skills with Akshay’s stardom, in a theme never heard of in Bollywood, disaster struck. All the action sequences, CGI and the expensive sets were a waste of time, effort and money.

Billu Barber – Mega stars like SRK and Irfan Khan delivering a flop is utterly disgraceful. They performed powerfully as always, but that didn’t quite attract the right crowd and was badly beaten at the box office.

Tashan -- The only good that came out of this movie was Saif meeting Kareena. The film starred Saif, Kareena, Anil Kapoor and Akshay Kumar. Kareena worked a lot on getting to size-zero for the role in the film, and that seemed to be the only work well done. The movie was all style and all bore.

Agent Vinod – After Tashan, Saif and Kareena were together once again, but by the time this film hit theatres, a lot of negative criticism was doing the rounds and all the marketing done, went to waste. The movie wasn’t as bad as the critics said but the film folded up under 50 crores and never managed to gather a crowd.

Yuvvraaj – This film was supposed to be Subhash Ghai’s comeback to direction after a long time and was vouched for as the biggest hit of 2008. With a mega cast of Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anil Kapoor, the film flopped badly with poor openings and was criticized as not in sync with current trends of film-making.

Aag – Ram Gopal Verma’s take on the cult-classic, Sholay, was termed as a disastrous mockery of a movie. Amitabh Bachchan’s negative side was the biggest promotional factor, but when it hit theatres, the crowd was all in favor of setting ‘aag’ to every copy of the film.

And so the list goes on with Tees Maar Khan, Joker, Azaan, Dangerous Ishq, Lafangey Parindey, Lovestory 2050, Veer, Pathshaala, Game, Mausam in recent years. These movies were promoted the right way but went down as disasters.
