Given that Miss India/World winners
rarely go on to win plaudits for their acting abilities, it’s a
long way that Priyanka
Chopra has come since her Bollywood debut 10 years ago. If
she was typecast as somewhat of a glamour queen early on in her
career, she has worked hard and proven herself to be one of the
most talented and versatile actresses around in Bollywood today.
Though Priyanka’s
actual debut was in the Tamil film, Thamizhan opposite Vijay in
2002, it was only in 2003 that she started her Bollywood innings
with The
Hero: Love Story of a Spy where she played the second lead
to Preity
Zinta opposite Sunny
Deol. It would take her another film, Andaaz
which saw her in a glam doll avatar,
to come to the notice of the audiences. Priyanka
won the Filmfare Best Debutante Award along with Lara
Dutta for the film.
The year 2004 saw her appear in a string of flops until she was
rescued by Salman
Khan-Akshay
Kumar starrer, Mujhse
Shaadi Karogi, where she didn’t have anything much to do,
except be wooed by the leading men. But she was not done yet, her
bold and confident portrayal of a scheming seductress in Aitraaz
confirmed that she was here to stay in Bollywood by winning
her the Filmfare Best Villain Award.
